Ultimate Edition 2.9 released

What is Ultimate Edition 2.9? Ultimate Edition 2.9 was built off Ultimate Edition 2.8 which is built off Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. All updates fully updated / upgraded old kernels purged, new initrd and vmlinuz rebuilt. Ultimate Edition 2.9 as with all odd release numbers was built with KDE users in mind. Ultimate Edition 2.9 has KDE, Gnome, Openbox and XFCE environments user selectable at login. A crisp new theme (121 to choose from) & tons of new software. LXDE was broken at time of build on the 32 bit side, so it did not make the cut I am sorry.

I also want to apologize for the delay of the release, my girlfriend of 11 years has been battling cancer & I do not spend anywhere close to the time I used to spend writing software etc. I know to many of you this is a major release and I should take time to explain in vivid detail what this is. I must once again apologize time has not & currently is not on my side. Please take it as what Ultimate Edition has always been, those that run it understand what I mean. Hopefully the statement a picture says a 1,000 words will pick up where I left off.

Enjoy,

TheeMahn

Oz Unity 1.0 Debut.

Preface:
Since the introduction of Microsoft Windows, computing has become open to the masses. This in itself was a good thing as with general acceptance of computing came open information exchange and connectivity. Windows however, was designed to make money and as such was developed from a business perspective – not a social one. Linux had a similar issue, however, it had one thing in its favour – Open Source.

Open Source allowed Linux to evolve and become whatever visionaries could conceive. From a boring business server, scientific tool, educational device to a functional desktop personal computer. Anything was possible, and still is. Canonicals Ubuntu operating system has blazed the trail in creating a functional stable desktop usable by people with a moderate to high knowledge of computing – the problem here being that 85-90% of computer users fall beneath this level of computing knowledge.

Various projects have been started to address this problem, such as 'Ultimate Edition', 'Mint', 'Kubuntu', all of which are excellent and serve certain purposes. I enjoyed using each and still do, but something just didn't feel right, it just wasn't me. Users struggling with Windows and viruses and spyware etc.. were still dumbfounded and perplexed when trying to deal with a Linux operating system. There was a need for an operating system which was as easy as could be – both from an installation point of view and an ease of use point of view. Something with all the hard work done such as Codecs, Flash and Java. A healthy mix of commonly used and required applications, not a huge clump of programs causing confusion to new users. An operating system with a look and feel pleasant to a majority of new users – not just the enlightened geeks amongst us. An operating system which can easily grow and be tailored to your personal wants and requirements.

Concept:
To create an operating system which would target new users to Linux or computing in general. An easy to install system which is inviting and intuitive to use, enhanced with applications that the majority of users would require on a day by day basis, which could easily be tailored to any individuals needs. In creating this project, we would provide the nucleus of this system and through consultation with the public on our forum, continue to evolve into something that will become indispensable for personal computer users world wide. During this process, we would also like to teach you how to create your own system – Give a man a fish...

Installation:
Burn the downloaded ISO 'image' to a DVD and then boot from the DVD. Alternatively if you don't have an optical drive, you can create a startup disk to USB flash drive and then boot your computer from there.

Known Issues:
If you are installing side by side with other operating systems, you may see a 'mounting' error appear on screen during install. You may need to cancel this message two or three times and has no consequence on the installation. After installation, on restart, Grub will not show your other installed operating systems. Continue loading into Oz Unity. Once in Oz, press Alt-F2 and in the dialogue box, type: gksu update-grub and press enter. Enter your password when asked and that's it.

Feedback:
If you would like to be part of this project, you are more than welcome to do so in whatever form you would like. From a tester, suggester to artist and coder. It should be fun and informative and together we may well just change the world.

Licences:
By downloading and using this system you acknowledge that Codecs, Flash and Java are pre installed and agree to their respective licences.

Ultimate Edition 2.8 Alpha / Beta

Alpha / Beta

It has been discussed with admin / mods and a majority has ruled to allow open testing of Ultimate Edition 2.8, for the first time in Ultimate Edition history. It is not to be taken lightly.

This is an alpha release. Do not install it on a production machine. This is being released to allow users to see new features etc. It is not suggested to install this release unless you would like to help report bugs. If you are going to test it, it is suggested to do so running a Live environment w/o installing it. I repeat this is an alpha release based on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, it is far from stable, you can expect to have problems. There are many known issues.

Gentlemen I am setting a IRC channel up on freenode, I am looking to set a applet on main to allow Ultimate Edition users to instant chat, 100,000 views a day I look for it to be a large channel.

HowTo Download and verify Ultimate Edition Welcome to Ultimate Edition !! This tutorial is intended to provide some General Guidelines for download

Welcome to Ultimate Edition !!

Ultimate Edition 2.6 Beta

Ultimate Edition 2.6 THEMES

This tutorial is intended to provide some General Guidelines for downloading, verifying and burning to DVD, any version of Ultimate Edition. These steps will help insure that your download and installation will be successful the first time.

The majority of problems experienced by new users of Ultimate Edition are caused by errors within the downloaded file and errors with burning that file to DVD.

The most frequently encountered problems for new users of Ultimate Edition, or any version of Linux, occurs during the very first steps involved in getting started with your new Operating System (OS) – Downloading and Burning the downloaded disk image to a CD or DVD.

This tutorial will guide Windows users (any version from Win98 to Win7) in this procedure using either Internet Explorer or Firefox as your browser. So, let's get started!

First, open either FireFox or Internet Explorer, and follow the appropriate section for the browser you are using:

Section A: INTERNET EXPLORER

1: Click on the following link to begin downloading the Ultimate Edition disk image - http://ultimateedition.info/

2: Locate the download link by scrolling down till you see the version you wish to use – either the X86 (32 bit) or the X64 (64 bit) version. NOTE: You will see something similar to the following:

Release Name: Ultimate Edition Gamers
Version Base: Ultimate Edition 2.4 (Karmic)
Environment(s): Gnome
Architecture: x64
Filesize: 4,030,230,528 (4.0GB)
MD5SUM: f048342826bcc7bf9986f36b18b48e0b

Download: Sourceforge

Release Name: Ultimate Edition Gamers
Version Base: Ultimate Edition 2.4 (Karmic)
Environment(s): Gnome
Architecture: x86
Filesize: 4,260,241,408 (4.0GB)
MD5SUM: 31d61c4f93cc1121690bd289a68e37e5

Download: Sourceforge

3: Now open Notepad (Start>Run>notepad and press Enter), then copy/paste the MD5SUM from the download information shown at the download link, for the version you are downloading (I will use the information for Ultimate Edition Version 2.4 x64 Gamers as shown above – you use the MD5SUM for the version you are downloading). This piece of information is critical to insuring that the download is not damaged or corrupted after the download is complete.

4: Click on the download link for the desired version of Ultimate Edition and select Save - be sure to note where the file is being saved, you will need to know where to find the file later. The download if any “recent” version of Ultimate Edition will be more than 2.5GB. Allow the download to complete.

5: Now you need to verify the downloaded file using an MD5SUM utility, such as MD5SUMMER available here http://www.md5summer.org/ .

6: Once the MD5SUM is verified and correct, you may proceed with burning the .ISO file to a DVD, using your favorite burner. You must make sure that your burner's burn speed is set to burn at 4X or the slowest speed your burner supports at or above 4x. It is imperative that the burn speed be as slow as possible to insure the burn is successful and without errors. Failure to do this correctly will, almost certainly result in a bad DVD, which will either have errors during the install, not install at all, or cause unpredictable results after the installation is complete.

7: You are now ready to boot to the Live DVD and explore your new Operating System! You can boot the DVD and browse all the applications and features without any changes being made to your PC. When you are ready to actually install Ultimate Edition, just click on the Install icon and proceed with the installation.

Section B: FireFox

1: There is an Add-on for FireFox called Down Them All, which is a Download Manager with the ability to verify the MD5SUM automatically on completion of the download. To use this Add-on just click on the Tools menu in FireFox, and select Add-ons, then select Get Add-ons and type downthemall (one word, no spaces) into the Search All Add-ons dialog box and press the Enter key on your keyboard. When you see the Add-on displayed, click on Add to FireFox button and then click on Install button to install the utility.

2: Now click the following link to begin downloading Ultimate Edition - http://ultimateedition.info/

3: When the Download information and link are displayed in your browser, use your mouse to Highlight and Copy the MD5SUM to your “clipboard”, then click on the download link and when FireFox displays the download dialog box, select Down Them All and then click OK. When the Down Them All dialog box appears, paste the MD5SUM you just copied to the cipboard into the Checksum (hash): entry field, and make sure that MD5 is selected as the HASH. Now your download file will be Automatically checked for validity and integrity as soon as the download is complete, with no further action on your part!

4: Once the MD5SUM is verified and correct, you may proceed with burning the .ISO file to a DVD, using your favorite burner.

5: You are now ready to boot to the Live DVD and explore your new Operating System! You can boot the DVD and browse all the applications and features without any changes being made to your PC. When you are ready to actually install Ultimate Edition, just click on the Install icon and proceed with the installation.

Ultimate Edition 2.4 Work in progress

From - TheeMahn

Yes, I have been building Ultimate Edition 2.4; it is based on Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10. I am running it as a matter of fact. It was built off a daily build of 9.10. The final release of Ultimate Edition 2.4 will be re-built off a final of Karmic. This is just a screencast to get the juices flowing. It is lightning fast especially where booting is concerned. I have also developed a Ultimate Edition 2.4 theme pack (2.4.5), unreleased to the public currently. The theme pack will install in Ubuntu Karmic as I am doing in the screencast below on a raw copy of Karmic in a virtual machine.

Ultimate Edition 2.4 Theme pack (2.4.5):

  • 4 GTK2 Themes
  • 2 Usplash’s x86 / x64 (autodetects architecture)
  • 4 Amarok Themes
  • 13 Wallpapers
  • Cairo clock theme (optional)
  • 6 Compiz cubecaps
  • 1 Skydome
  • 1 Xsplash (karmic+ based distros)
  • 4 Emerald themes
  • 1 TTF font
  • 2 GDM Themes (currently only in Jaunty or below)
  • 1 Icon theme (~15,000 icons)
  • 1 Sound theme

All is subject to change before final release. The default wallpaper changes color depending on time of day. This theme pack will be pre-installed in Ultimate Edition 2.4 when released. True work for me begins in 2 days. Just trying to make sure you ladies and gents don’t think I am screwing off over here ;) Sorry about the choppiness in the beginning of the video I am no longer running 2 video cards.
